Airline Luggage Fees

Today the Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article on luggage fees. They provided a handy breakdown of luggage fees by airlines (left) just in time for the holidays.

Many times I've sat looking out the portal window asking myself the question: "How much is it really costing this airline to fly my luggage? " According to the WSJ the answer is $15 per bag. While it's debatable whether airlines should be expected to allow the first bag free, in a time where airline service has been reduced to paying $2 for a soda, the data makes it feasible to pay a $15 luggage fee. What is more arguable are why the fees for additional bags, especially the oversized bike case is so high. Simple answer, the oversized luggage carrier (aka the triathlete or cyclist) is carrying the heaviest burden to dig the airlines out of their problems. Pricing strategies and online travel shopping habits have have made airlines scared to increase ticket prices. An increase on airfare of just a few dollars could drop them to page two or three of Farecast search sorted by price. Unwilling to deal with this result airlines have resorted to extra fees here and there. Until the buying behavior changes it's relatively safe to say it does not look like these fees are going away anytime soon. Luckily, if this is a deciding factors for you, there are a few carriers (Southwest in particular) out there who continue to support the old ways of airline service.

Here at Anthony Travel we continue to speak with the airlines on behalf of our athletes. We understand it is a particularly important topic for our traveling triathletes. While most efforts fall upon deaf ears, one day we will win a token for our efforts and we look forward to sharing this with you.
